Day 15
Wickenby Wood
Week three was supposed to begin with just a quick tip-toe around somewhere local, after yesterday’s extended exertions in big boots and muddy fields!

I’m now around the half way point time-wise, but I’m ahead of my target in terms of miles walked, so just a couple of miles today would have been fine – but as it turned out, the early morning drizzle cleared away to leave largely clear skies and bright sunshine – so we kept on walking!
Initially, we were just thinking of getting down to somewhere near Wickenby Wood, but we weren’t necessarily planning on going off the beaten track, particularly since six and a bit miles in my boots yesterday left me with a bit of a blister – today was a comfy trainers only kind of day!
But upon arrival at the woods, we were pleasantly surprised to see that the track through it was still largely walkable, if quite covered with fallen leaves by now, and it was only really soggy once we got a good way in. If we’d had our boots, we could have attempted more of a loop of the wood, but as it was, in and out again was still a pleasant little stroll.
The walk home was punctuated with highlights too – first, we spotted the flyboys over at RAF Scampton making giant smoke heart shapes in the sky a few times (squint in the photos below, you might just see them!) then we managed to pick-up a jar of the plum jam we passed on a previous walk, before finally encountering our good neighbours from across the street heading out for a drive down to Wragby for a walk in the woods down that way – a good plan for another day!

“Tomorrow is likely to be a quiet one – the forecast is for rain and since I’m still nicely ahead of schedule, it might be a case of school runs only – don’t want to agitate that blister too much! Still a way to go yet!”
