Day 14

Newtoft

You know when you have a good idea? You know when you start out on that really good idea? You know when you’re too far gone on that good idea to give up on it?

You know when you realise it wasn’t that good an idea?
Yeah. That was today!

Ings Farm – Newtoft

Having checked out a few potential local routes on footpathmap.co.uk, we had shortlisted two runs for today – one would take us down towards Wickenby woods, the other up to Newtoft. Both trails required us to ‘boot up’, as we’d be well off the usual pavements and trails our trainers could cope with, but we set off in to the fields sure that things would be fine; ignorance is bliss, isn’t it?

We’d gone barely a half mile before we realised that the ‘footpath’ was no such thing – the assigned route (which our GPS tracking shows we followed pretty accurately to be fair) took us right in to the middle of the muddy corn field; it was quite weird walking out to a signpost in the middle of nowhere which then pointed us onward further in to nowhere!

In lieu of anything resembling a track, we managed to walk on the trails left behind by the farm machinery – they were ‘just’ solid enough, with only the occasional squelchy bit, but we were both moaning about back ache well before the 3 mile mark!

Small mercies though, the weather largely held once again! There was a little bit of drizzle a couple of times, and that wind didn’t half kick up something wicked! And the final straight out of Newtoft back up to good ol’ Sprid’ Road just seemed to go on forever!

“All things considered though, a fairly decent jaunt out – the first couple of miles were heavy and slow going, but we still managed to pick up the pace again once we found tarmac! Wouldn’t have imagined that a fortnight ago, that’s for sure!”
